can computer companies legally do this?

Right now I am making payments on my computer through a PC company. By their own admission, I have paid the thing off, minus 23-25 dollars. Okay. Then the company turned around and tacked on 1,425 in service fees, and interest, and they are saying they will settle the fees and intrest at 1,000. Um okay. Is this even legal? One person in Business Practices said that I need to tell them that if they continue to try and go after me, I can go after them in court. The next person tells me to call their complaints department and find out what I can do that way. What would you do?

The only way they can do apply the interest is if you had a contract that states you will pay it off in full by a certain date and you didn't pay all of it off by this date. The company should not be charging you service fees unless you had to have them work on your computer or had to get customer service from the company. I would call the company and see what they have to say and make them explain what all of the fees are for and check your contract if you have one to see if there was an agreement in the small print.

well basically the only thing which was in my contract was being late, they can charge you a 25 dollar fee thats it. They basically came up with the 1,400 figure in one month.

If this is the case then I would call their claims department and ask them about this and see what they have to say about it. If they give you the run around or if they give you an answer that makes no sense according to your contract I would read the contract to them and tell them you will be contacting a lawyer.
