Why Do We Need History Lessons At School?

February 10, 2007 7:28pm CST
Why do we need to know about what happened in the world when we wasn't here? I suppose its ok if your interested but where i am we got forced to learn about it. All we really need to know is whats happening around us today, to me the past doesn't change anything... Anyone feel the same?

Actualy the past changes anything. If those people from the past would just stay home or something like this you wouldn't exist. It's a long story. The problem is that you need to think about the possibilities not just say "I don't need to know anything that happened in the past" . You must think, or probably you are not old enaught.I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the response... I suppose it does help a bit to learn about the past, but i don't really care about the war and stuff...

omg i definetly agree!! like we learned it through out grade school!! we dont need to learn it in college! its a freakn total waste of time and i really really really dont think it should be a G.E. we dont need that crap in order to graduate..we passed it in grade school so it should just stop there... no more history its boring!! it should just be an elective!!

We need history to learn about the past and prepare for teh future. How can we know what to do or not to do if we don't know the history behind such actions? History helps us know what to do in the future. History is one of the most important subjects in school. How can we know how to handle Iraq if we don't know the history of the people or the regions?

I'm a journalism student and at the same time an avid reader of history books. The reason why we have to learn about the past is simple. We can never fully understand what is happening today without considering past events. The war in Iraq, for example, goes back as far as the administration of Bush "the father" and the same is true for the rest current issues. I understand your point. I'm not patient with memorizing a lot of dates but being interested draws me closer to learning the lessons from historic events. I apologize if I join the discussion since I stand diametrically to what you've posted. Anyway, I don't mean to antagonize you.

the way the world is today is the result of thousands of events and descisions in the past. Some of them good some bad. If you understand what happened in our past we can prevent repeating the bad things and promote the good things.

Yes we do need history lessons at school to understand who we are today, why we have religion, why the war started and what your ancestors sacrificed in order for you to live in a free world today etc. It opens your eyes and broadens your horizons
