Leftover rice...what to do with it.

If you have leftover rice, rather than refrigerating it, you can wrap it tightly in a packet using plastic wrap. Freeze it. When you need rice for soup or if you want it for a lunch or you have enough packets to put together for a family meal, simply remove from the freezer, cook it wrapped in the microwave for a minute or more if needed for larger amounts. Unwrap carefully to avoid steam burns. Presto...quick rice.

yah...champorado is very great specially for this winter season here in U.S. i usually cook rice for lunch & make sure to have some for the following morning to make into champorado or sometimes arroz caldo or chicken congee for dinner. Hot native tsokolate can really help us fight or stand the cold temperature during the early morning walks to bus or train stations.

My favorite would be garlic rice - it goes with everything. Just fry a couple of chopped garlic cloves in butter (make sure it doesnt burn ok) and add your rice. Sprinkle with a little salt to taste and it's good to go!

You can also make fried rice and rice pudding with leftover rice. Also, one of my fave recipes with leftover rice...you mix it with leftover cooked chicken pieces (small), cheddar cheese, crispy bacon bits (real bacon), a bit of mayo, and some salt/pepper/any other herbs & spices you like...put that filling into biscuit/pizza dough to make small pocket snacks...bake per dough instructions for 10-15 minutes...the PERFECT lunch or snack.

Great tip, I don't usually save left over rice (in my house there is little chance of any left over rice) so I have never thought to freeze it. Thanks for the tip

You only need to have even half a cup. You can always join several little packets for a meal or use one or two in a soup or stew. It needn't be much, but it's better than just wasting it and throwing it away.

We don't usually have leftover rice but freezing it is a good idea...I never thought of it. I occasionally make a little rice pudding with raisins if I have some leftover.

Filipinos just love to eat rice. We've got the congee that we like eat in the morning. just fry some garlic and onion, put some bits of chicken, leftover rice, and some water. stir, add some salt and pepper to taste. we also got the champorado which is really good during the rainy season. Left over rice, water, sugar or honey and some chocolate. serve it with milk. really delicious you won't regret it...

What I do with our left over rice is I usually make a fried rice out of it. I mix it with some green peas, shredded fried egg, dice ham or sweet sausages and you have a new dish in the making. You can also mix it with your own likings.

Microwaving plastic wrap is not a good idea though. There are toxins in the plastic that can seep into foods when the plastic gets too hot. It's best to defrost the rice, unwrap it and then microwave it the rest of the way.

Whatever you say. Actually I have heard that. Or you can unwrap it and put it in a covered dish and reheat it in the micro or conventionally.

We rarely have leftovers but when I have some rice left I like to toss it in a frypan with some soy sauce and a few veggies for fried rice.

Freezing steamed rice also dries it up which makes it a lot better to make Fried Rice!! :) I always freeze leftover rice. You could also just dump them into a pot and add lots of water and presto - instant porridge/congee! I love those! hehe Great post! Most people do not know this fact and throw away leftover rice!

If it sits around and you don't feel safe to eat it, you can always turn it into paste for children's paper projects or repairing fallen wallpaper.

Thanks for the tip! i usually don't store rice (and try to tell my hubby to not cook as much as he usually does!) because it doens't seem to store very well in the fridge. But I'll try your method and maybe it will help me to be less wasteful!
