The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread.

Thinking about this statement made me wonder when sliced bread was invented. According to Wikipedia the first 'loaf at a time' slicer was made in 1928 by Frederick Rohwedder in Iowa. So when somebody says, 'That's the best thing since sliced bread' they are saying that over the last seventy years or so they haven't seen anything like it. I doubt they really mean it. This made me think, what is the big deal about sliced bread. I think the world would still be turning if it hadn't been invented, grass would still be growing and we would still have two arms. Actually you can hardly call it an invention, its just an innovation. So think next time somebody says it, its not really that much of a compliment

Have you ever sliced home-made bread? What a messy task. I rather like bread being pre-sliced, so that I don't have to clean up after making toast. However, I see your point about the exaggeration of the statement. I believe a more fitting point of comparison might be: "The best thing since rolled toilet paper". Now that's an invention that really deserves some acknowledgement. (Said with a smile and sincere gratitude). Imagine if we were all still using leaves. Ugghhh!!!
