Do you have to go to church to be a Christian?

Do you think it's a requirement to attend/be a member of a church in order to be a Chrsitian? Do you think God cares if we worship Him in a church or worship Him at our home? If you do think we have to attend a church, should it be a traditional church? Contemporary? Does it matter if it meets in a building or outside on the beach?

God commands His children: Do not forsake the assembly. The assembly takes place on the first day of the week and that is Sunday. In this assembly, Christians do the 5 forms of whorship - singing, praying, reading the Holy Bible, taking the Lord's Supper, and giving. The 4 forms of worship can be done anywhere by any Christian, that is not necessarily in the assembly. The Lord's Supper cannot be taken alone so Christians ought to attend the assembly because if a Christian doesn't take the Lord's Supper, he is cutting his relationship with the Father. Besides, God commands His children to exhort one another, etc. The Greek word "ekklesia" is translated into "church" which is in the New Testament not a building but a congregation of people called out by God who are called Christians. The assembly may take place anywhere - in a building or outside or even on the beach, any place where people may assemble.

I agree with Sen, We are commanded by God to come together and worship. Whether or not the Sabbath is pointed out to be on a saturday or sunday. Who created the calendar? The Mayans?(Idon'tknow) My point is Our society now goes to church on Sunday. I really don't think this is important, as long as you give God time. Your personal relationship with him is what's important. It's not about the place, it's the people and mainly GOD's Presence that makes a church.

Thanks for your reply. There's alot of info in it and I found it really interesting to read! Your statement about the day of the week is a really interesting one....that it should take place on Sunday. Makes me have a good idea for another topic for discussion....should we worship on Saturday or Sunday? Which day is the Sabbath?

Is church attendance a prerequisite for salvation? No! Absolutely not. Faith in Christ is the only thing necessary to being a Christian. That said, it is good and healthy for a Christian to have accountability and fellowship with other believers. This does not necessarily mean that you have to park your butt in a pew for an hour or more every Sunday, but it does mean that in some way you should seek out others of your faith.

Accountability to others....good point~kind of goes along with the appearance we give as a Christian, if that makes sense.....we may SAY we're a Christiam, but if we never go to church or fellowship with other Christians, then people who notice that may think differently....

Ultimately, I don't think it really matters whether others believe we are Christians or not. It's more about our personal walk with Christ.

I don't think being or to be a Christian you need to go to Church every now and then. But as a Christian it is part of your faith and your religion to attend the Holy Mass. But in order to be a Christian you need to put it not only in mind by also to heart and the same follow the values and rules being a Christian. If you make mistakes or disobeyed God, it doesn't mean that you Love God less because you didn't bare in mind that you need to do good. We all make mistakes. As long as we know and accept God is always with us and will continue loving us no matter what.

I don't think it is a requirement. But I think it is pretty clear we are to fellowship with other believers. To be a support and encouragement for each other. I don't think it matters where you meets. Wether it be in someones home or on a beach as long as we are meeting with other fellow believers to help lift us upand encourage us.

Being a Christian means being a follower/believer of Christ - not in a building. God could care less about the building we worship Him in, as long as we worship HIM and Him alone. I think too often people get caught up in "oh my church is the 'right' church because a, b and c." and not enough of "My God, Jesus Christ, is the right God." Same thing goes for which "right" version of the Bible we are "supposed" to read. Simply put, read His Word - however you can get it and in whatever form makes you feel close to Him, and worship Him - however that is. Some of the most profound experiences I have had with the Lord have been alone, in nature, or just in "every day life". "The kingdom of heaven is within you. Not in buildings of brick or stone." That is how we need to see Christ. In each other...not in buildings. We need to focus more on His love, grace, mercy and forgiveness and less on which "right" building to go to, which "right" outfit to wear to it, which "right" Bible version they read, which "right" music they play and which "right" programs they have. Fellowship is awesome, and Christ Himself said that you will know true believers by their fruit. So if you find a church that you like, and that has believers that are really on fire for the Lord and has solid Bible teaching - thats awesome! But don't write off alone time with the Lord too. He is everywhere...from the punk kid reading "The Message" Bible listening to Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and U2's Christ-centered music, to the Baptist woman dressed to the nines, leather bound, engraved KJV Bible in hand with old hymns in her head. We are saved by grace, not by buildings or writings or music or other people. Simple.

No, you don't have to attend a church to be a christian but by going to church you are around other christians who can help build you up and encourage you in your daily walk with Christ. I don't think that the kind of church is really that important just as long as it meets your spiritual needs.

As long as the church you attend is following the bible correctly then it's ok. But it's not about meeting "YOUR spiritual needs", it's about what God requires of us. Too many people are concerned about what makes THEM happy and what entertains them from church. They are missing the point. It's not about you, it's about God.

You have to become a member of the Bible believing Church and attend the services every Sunday, unless you are on vacation and then if there is a church that is affiliated with your church and you will be there on Sunday, to attend that church as well. It says in Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. So this means that we have to attend church and the only time we can be outside on a beach, talking about God and praying is that there is no Bible believing Church nearby and that soon God will make sure things happen, like perhaps a Church being built, etc. so that we can meet in a building. You can also have house congregations if there is no church where the gospel is not preached properly. It does not matter the design, whether traditional or contemporary as long as the true word of God is being preached.

If you believe the Bible, God's Holy Word, it says in Hebrews 10th chapter, the 25th verse,"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching". This means for us not to give up the habit of meeting together,as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer. I pray you understand this and I have helped you in soom way. Love in Christ, Dresser

I think it's important to go to church to get encouragement and to worship with others. I enjoy the sermons that teach Biblical wisdom in today's situations. The type of church is up to you. I never enjoyed church, and so never went. But I found one that is non-denominational, charismatic, and SO MUCH FUN!!! The music is like a concert and the whole congregation gets into it. The sermons are great and I usually end up getting a copy to take home and listen to again. Another way to look at it is this. If you have a good relationship with someone, is it fair that they always come to your house, but you don't ever want to go to their house? God loves to come to your house, but he'd also love for you to come to his!

personally, going to church is something that christians should do. its basically visiting God in His house, and its just and hour or two in a week. but if we go to church and not concentrate and just merely go there just for the sake of going, we better not to. spending time ouside, doing the right things is a lot better than going to church and be hypocrites

If you're going to live a christian life then church is a neccessity. If you are not regularly around christians, then most likely your faith will dwindle. You need that encouragement from your fellow christians. We are also required by God to meet once a week and observe the Lord's Supper. It doesn't matter where you meet though. It doesn't have to be in a traditional church building. As long as you attend and are sincere with your worship.
