what is the difference between a flat and an apartment

hey i dnt think thr is much of a diffrence... its like americans call it apartment and we in india we call it flat... i dnt think they ever state their house as flats......

I didn't think there was a difference except in terminology. Americans tend to say "apartment" whereas the English and Australians also use the word "flat".
