In buying cars: New or Used? Toyota or Honda?

We are planning to buy a family car (Basically for 2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 infant, and 1 helper) but we are quite confused wether to buy a new car or a used car. I think that buying a car is not an investment since its value depreciates as time goes on. So I was opting for a used car. But some friends of mine informed me that I should be careful for I might spend more when I buy a used car because of the maintenance and the repairs I need to do. What do you think? Also which make is better? Toyota or Honda?

After bad experience with a used car I prefer a new one, like I do recently I have a new Toyota, and is the best thing I have done after a bad decision in choosing a used one.

It sounds like you need something reliable, you're caring precious cargo!! I think depending on the dealer you can get a really good used car. Just make sure that you have an independent mechanic check it out before you buy it. Are you sure you want a car though? A mini-van might be a better option for you, with the number of people you have going places. Car seats take up a lot of room, so I'm not sure that there will be enough space for a helper too! In addition to your children, you'll have a diaper bag and perhaps a stroller too?? That takes up considerable room too. I'm sure you've thought of all of this though! LOL. I've heard good things about Toyotas and Hondas. We have a Mazda and haven't had any major problems with it - we bought it used 6 years ago!

It depends how much it has been used and how much it needs in repair. I would go for a new car if I'm financially good. I would recommend a Toyota - per experience although I've never owned a Honda.

I recently bought a Toyota Rav4 (SUV) and I think I’ve made a very good deal. It was a used car but only one year old and with a low mileage. Now I still have a full year manufacturer’s warranty on my car. The highest depreciation of the value of a new car occurs during the first year. This is the reason I think that the best deals are made by buying one year old cars. You don’t have to pay for the first maintenance that occurs at very low mileage, you don’t have to running-in the car and you can still benefit from the manufacturer’s warranty. For twenty years, I was working by Toyota as mechanic and I have to say that Toyota is for me the best vehicles make. Toyota are strong cars, their quality level is very high and their price affordable. Toyota cars never have such mechanical problems that generate costly repairs.
