I have a 7 year old daughter and she struggles a lot when writing. She does a lot of spelling mistakes because she writes how she feels. For example looks she writes it lucs. have she writes it hev. and besides that when we study the words she does not remember them when she comes to putting them into a sentence.

My younger brother did the same thing. He was always being told to sound it out. It's just a matter of memorization. If the teachers aren't concerned that it's something more serious, I wouldn't worry too much. Pick a couple items around the house and post tags on them with the proper spelling. Allow her to learn the sounds by identifying the object. She'll pick it up quick enough, I'm sure.

Thanks a lot. That is a good suggestion.

Your daughter will improve as she ages. Several children I know did the same thing but as time went by, they began to correct themselves and even comment on how badly they spelled at an earlier age. Your daughter will begin to memorize more and more words as time goes by - give her some simple words and have her practice with those and explain to her how the letters sound - for example - a in apple is pronounced differently than the a in ape. Explaining that to her for the words she commonly misspells may assist her in future.

I would assume she has been tested at school by the age of 7. If all the test are "normal" then I would not be to concerned. I worried my whole life about being a poor speller and then learned it is a memory issue and not related to intelligence.

You might also try the phonics cds and vcr tapes/dvds. Many kids seem to really benefit by using these.

I wouldn't worry about her yet. Young children are often phonetic spellers. In fact, when I start teaching children to spell and write, I teach them to listen for the sounds they hear and try to spell the words using their sounds. She's still young. Help her keep working on it, and she'll probably improve with maturity.

It sounds like you she needs some help. Make up some cards and get her to sound out the words and then spell them. Friends' son had a bit of a problem so we set him some spelling words on the basis of look, spell, write, say and check. This meant that he had to look at the word, then spell it, write it down without looking again and then say the word and only then could be check that it was right. Good luck and I hope it goes well for all of you.
