Recently there have been several cases in my neck of the woods of people who have stolen significant amounts of money from their places of employment. In fact, one of those cases involved a woman who stole thousands of dollars in donations to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. How can this happen? And, do you think that these cases will affect a person's decision to donate to a well known charity?

This has happened to me twice where I got a letter in the mail claiming I won a sweepstake and along with the letter was a huge amount of a check Since the second check I had deposited from two different companies were counterfeit not knowing on my part, the bank decieded to put a hold on my bank account for a year.

I don't even bother to open mail claiming I have won something, especially if I have no knowledge of signing up or entering to win anything. That's unfortunate about your bank account being frozen, but take it as a valuable lesson learned to never assume you have won anything no matter how convincing the packaging.

I think that these cases do have a negative impact on charities, which is a shame. Between cases of outright theft and the fact that some charities mismanage funds so badly that only a small portion of each donation actually ends up where donors believe that it will, it's amazing that legitimate charitable organizations are able to function at all. You have to wonder what type of a person would steal from the Make-a-Wish Foundation. It doesn't get much lower that to steal from dying kids. Sad.

Yeah I couldn't believe it when I saw the story on the news. The woman got jail time, maybe two years I think. Not long enough in my opinion. She stole a ton of money and did not seem to have any remorse at all. I know she bought cars and a house for her parents as well as a hot tub and other frivolous items. Sad is right.

I think it will make people leary of donating. There has been a lot of that going on where I live also. The latest was a lady that stole money from the PTA fund that she was the Treasurer for. There has also been several who work for counties in the clerks office that have been caught. They always seem to be people who are trying to keep up with the Jones if you know what I mean. They don't really need the money, they need to quit spending it on stuff they can live with out.

The need to quit spending it period. It's not there's to spend. They say money is the root of all evil. It's sure at the root of a lot of it. Thanks for posting.

People are greedy, and with when you're dealing with huge foundations, it's all too easy for some money to be misplaced. It's horrible and it's sick but it's a sad truth. And I know it does affect some people when it comes to donating - there have been so many stories of money going into the wrong pocket that a handful of my friends have decided to only donate to those groups they've had personal experience with.

I don't blame your friends for making that decision, but it's sad to know that the organizations and businesses that have been involved in these scandals suffer the ill affects of less money coming in. These criminals ruin things for everyone else.
