Whiter or darker skin?

For most Asians, whiter skin is more desirable than the brown skin that is dominant in most of the Southeast Asia Region. Men here seem to prefer women with whiter skin, than brown skinned ones. Advertising does not also help a lot. As a result, there are so many whitening products that are out in the market here. From soaps, creams, scrubs, powder and would you believe even lip balm? I even saw a whitening bodymist from Avon. On the other hand, most western countries seem to desire a darker skin tone. I saw some white people lounging in a poolside in Westin Phil Plaza Hotel last summer...Under the scorching sun, I might add. What's your stand on this, would you rather keep your natural skin color or use whitening products/get a tan?

this is very interesting to me on such different views in such different parts of the world..... i think its just how we are raised. i like my skin to be a lil bit tan but not too much. the whiter skin thing is why geishas paint there faces white than??? is it because they seem to look more like dolls thats more desirable???
