There is a documented disorder called Seasonal Affectedness Disorder, this is depression directly affected by the seasons. If you have SAD then you feel fine in the summer but become depressed in the winter. 20% of people in Sweden and 20-30% of people in Alaska suffer from this disorder. It is thought that SAD is the result of the lack of serotonin in the brain. Sunlight helps with the production of this brain chemical so you produce less of it in the winter due to less sunlight being available, which could possibly cause you to be depressed. The exact mechanism of SAD is not known. The treatment for SAD is to use a light box which uses a full spectrum bulb that puts off the kind of light found in nature.

I have seasonal affective disorder, and the weather definitely affects my mood. When it is grey and gloomy I feel depressed. I also feel depressed if I am in a dark room with few windows, or in a bsement. I need a certain amount of sunlight. I felt GREAT when I was on the plane last week, coming down here to Arizona. It was nice. I was above the clouds, and grey snowy weather.

Yes it does and that has been proven that in many people winter because there is not so much sunlight can cause depression.
