How do I change the clutch release bearing on my 1993 tdi discovery?

I have been told that the noise coming from the gearbox on my car when the clutch pedal is let up is a worn release bearing. I have not been able to hire a transmition jack anywhere and was wondering if it is possible to take the engine out and rectify the problem this way. I have a overhead hoist with 25ft clearence. Thanks for any advice.
