authentification and valuation of antique books

I have been given the task of determining the value and authenticity of a signed book called Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington and I have no clue where to go with my question and whom to trust. You can feel the impression in the paper where the pen strokes are. Anyone have suggestions?
