Looking for a birth parent when you were adopted

Just wondering is there anyone here with ideas on where to start the search for a birth parent. My husband was adopted when he was born and we are just curious about his birth father. We know his mother and have a pic of his father. We know his name and state he resided in but keep hitting dead ends. From what we were told he did not even know his birth mother was pregnant. Any ideas?
