I love to quilt. Every quilt tells a story. Quilts are like an extention of oneself. Quilting is a beautiful craft and form of artwork. Each quilt normally tells a meaningful story. From the types, color, and pattern of the pieces, to the color and choice of the border. Here is one story that I would like to share with you: A young man worked for the electric company and was electricuted while at work, leaving behind a wife and small child. He had also served time in the military. His wife wanted a quilt made out of his old military (camouflage) uniforms, for their daughter. After the quilt was finished, there were enough scrapes leftover to make a quilt for my youngest son. The piece is called Jacob's Ladder because if you look closely it looks like a ladder.

My quilt is a memory scrap quilt. It is made up from scraps left over from clothes I have made for my children and myself, as well as scraps from my mum, so when I look at the patches, I remember each family member and what the piece was from. One Christmas about 14 years ago, I made my mother a quilt in secret. All her grandchildren drew her a picture with those fabric crayons that you iron afterwards to make them permanent. To make up blocks .... there are only 7 grandchildren ... I drew a family tree on one and the adults all signed a block. The same year I made a scrap quilt for my aunt. They were both really surprised by their gifts and a few weeks ago I visited my aunt and she is still using her quilt, as does my mum. I am quilting a Trip Round the World quilt at the moment, but to be honest, I prefer my scrap quilt to the carefully co-ordinated one!

Yes, see..that is what I meant by quilts telling a story. The ones made from special fabrics and themes (my eldest son has a quilt made from the blue jeans that he wore over the years). Those quilts, in my opinion are mementos and keepsakes that cannot be replaced because they have memories attached. I was not able to post an image of the jacob's ladder. I meant to. I will try again and hopefully it will work this time. I am sure your mother enjoyed the quilt very much because of the love put into by you and her grandchildren. What a wonderful keepsake for her and a nice gift from you.
