My review and thoughts THE DEPARTED is about: two men from opposite sides of the law; one is undercover within the Massachusetts State Police and the other in the Irish mafia, both violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities. If you like gangster movies and have not seen this film go rent it on DVD now! (you don’t need this review) If you have already seen it then I guess you must be reading this either because you love me or you like to make opinion comparisons. Once again I might save you a bit of time by stating this: I love gangster movies. Directed by the one and only Martin Scorsese this film has a grand cast including: Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin. Okay, if that is too much testosterone for you Vera Farmiga is the romantic interest of the film, but of course with all the raging male talent around her, she does drop her pants in the film. THE DEPARTED is actually a remake of the popular Hong Kong crime thriller: INFERNAL AFFAIRS. The new screenplay is written by William Monahan who was nominated for the Golden Globe, but lost out. Martin Scorsese did receive the best director golden globe, however, I am pulling for William to get the Oscar; the film is nominated for five. In the beginning it may take the viewer a bit of adjusting to get used to the back and forth style of story telling. The transitions are a bit rough, however, it sets a bit of a stylish mood for the film and is necessary overall. Music is often used for the scene to scene transitions and the soundtrack choices are fun for the ear even if they sometimes feel loudly out of place. Jack Nicholson brings all of his charm to his role and Leonardo Dicaprio comes in and reestablishes his Hollywood “cool”. Shrugging off that pretty-boy look and going unshaven gritty, Leo stands out amongst the stellar cast. Every part, by every star is acted out well, though the real reason you grow to care about and enjoy these characters stems from good writing; because really it is a generic genre it fights to stand out in. Whenever there is a film and bloody action is involved there ends up being a bunch of people spouting out Quentin Tarantino comparisons. THE DEPARTED has gotten more attention for its award nominations and cast rather than likeness to other films, which once again can be accredited to the good writing. However, the ending of the film, is one rare occasion where I myself would compare things to Tarantino and state: wow, that scene sort of felt like a Tarantino scene. The fact that the ending was not how my mind wanted things to fall perfectly did not ruin the overall experience for me though. The Departed is around 2 ½ hours of Irish gangster film and I never wanted it to end. It is one awesome, bloody piece of entertainment.
