violent movies(should i let my 12yr old watch them or not?)

recently my 12 year old child has came up with a liking for rather violent movies i was wondering whether or whether not to let him watch them i don't particularly like him watching them but i don't want to disabuse him of his interest should i be the harsh parent or the friendly one? please reply i seriously need help here :S
