Is it the person starring in it, is it the story? What, to YOU, makes a movie a classic?

Put very simply: TIME. All that is time, noone else is. Time can make everything from anything and nothing from everything. That's my oppinion.

A movie becomes a classic - when the whole world watches it Like the Passion of Christ, Titanic. It is also a classic when after so many years many still want to see it. Like the Sound of Music, Snow White.

yes, Titanic is already a classic, even though it isn't as old as the normal "classics". thanks so much for sharing that.

I was under the impression that a 'classic' movie was a popular movie from at least twenty five years ago. It does have something to do with the actors and the story line to make the movie a 'classic' later on in years. As an example, back in the late 70's when 'Grease' came out, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, it was a very good movie but most folks didn't look at the movie as a 'classic' later on down the road. It wasn't a classic back then, but it is now. Time and popularity makes a classic movie. I think that it works the same with cars, a car isn't a classic until it is twenty five years old.

i agree that it has to be older, its just that some don't ever make it to the "classic" status. Popularity is a major factor, I agree. Thank you for a great response.

I believe there are a few traits that make a movie a classic in my mind. I think that in order for a movie to be a classic it must have characters that a person can relate to, a good storyline and as well some very memorable moments. I find that the movies I tend to classify as a classic have all of these traits within them. The stories are gripping and exciting, the characters are all unique and different and there are always moments in all of the movies I think are classics that stand out to me. I don't necessarily believe that a certain actor can make a movie a classic on his/her own and that he needs a good story to back up his/her talent. I find a classic tends to stand up to the test of time and is still as good today as it was whenever I saw it for the first time. For example, in my mind "The Breakfast Club" is a classic movie to me. It had a great storyline behind it about a bunch of kids from all walks of life within the school being sentenced to detention together. It has a vast variety of characters in which each one of them are unique, as well as different in there own little way. And it also involves some very good actors from the 80's. There were also quite a few memorable moments from that movie that I can still recall today. That movie has not lost any of it's edge or attitude form the day it came out and I believe it's still one of the greatest movies out there. There are people in it that I saw every day when I went to school and there are others that I can really relate to. Another good movie that I consider a classic is Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It also involves everything that makes up a classic film in my opinion. You've got a very compelling storyline, however unbelievable it might be. You've got the variance in terms of how different one character is from another one and how one relates and interacts with another. There are plenty of memorable moments from this one as well. There are characters that everyone can relate to in this movie and I believe it is a classic because of all of these things. I also believe it's a classic because it helps you to question if something like what had happened in the movie.. Could happen in the future some how. It makes you question your own existence in this world as well I find. I think in essence a classic movie has all of these elements within it but it also has to have something else. I think if anything it has to have some sort of value to the person who has watched it. Whether it be that it takes you back to a time in your life when you first saw it or it helps you to revisit your childhood and the feelings you experienced when you watched it back then. So, in conclusion, I truly believe that a classic film has to have characters that a person can relate to, a good storyline and some very memorable moments. Above and beyond that though I think a classic film has to have something in common with the person who watched it and believes it to be a classic. If they have a reason like it takes them back to a time in their life or helps them to revisit a time in their life when they first saw the movie then it is a true classic in my humble opinion. I think as well if it can stand the test of time and still make the same impact on people nowadays that it did when it first came out, you have a classic film then as well on your hands! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

The story makes a movie a classic.A true classic is timeless. It can be played today and still hold up, make people laugh or cry or think about an issue. You can't try to make an classic, it just becomes a classic.
