Where is the compassion?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s I remember how people used to have compassion for each other. It seems to have dwindled as times went on. I remember when people saw a homeless person, they would give him some money or bring him something to eat. Now you hear people say things like, get a job or look at that damn bum. Teenagers going around beating up homeless people. People ignoring cries of help from someone getting attacked in broad daylight. People ignoring the cries and screams from an abused child or spouse next door. Has humanity gotten so used to violence and poverty that they don't notice it anymore? Or are we so wrapped up in ourselves, busy talking on the cellphone or tracking the investments on the laptop, that we don't notice the world around us? It seems as if we loose compassion for each other as we advance more. I think we need to get back to some basics values. What is your opinion on this?
