The two sports are completely different. With Roller skating, you have wheels on your shoes and with ice skating, you have a thin blade that you are balancing on. With ice skating, I think you need to have stronger ankels than with roller skating. The concept of how to skate is the same with pushing your feet outwards and balancing yourself. With either sport, when you fall it is going to hurt. Ice does not bend and neither does the wooden boards of the roller rink, I've only been roller skating and I spilled so badly that I bruised my face. My daughter enjoys both sports and if mediocre at both. Whether ice skating or roller skating it is terrific cardio exercise. Enjoy yourself and have fun!

They're not the same, but they are very similar. I learned to ice skate before I learned to roller blade, so that's backwards from most people, but I noticed the differences as well. If you can roller skate decently well, though, you'll learn to ice skate in no time.

To me ice skating is easier, because your skates go into the ice, so it's easier to turn, to stop and to manuever quickly. With roller skating, when you turn and stop you're basically skidding the plastic wheels along the ground.

I's almost the same, and falling is definitely the same pain, the only difference is you land up, with a cold and wet behind:)

I think Ice-skating might be similar to inline skating, so if you have ever done that you might find they have the same sensation, but I really don't think regular roller-skating is the same. I have done both and I have fallen doing both. I think it is easier to loose your footing on roller skates, but it is easier to loose your balance on ice skates. The reason is that I tend to want to look at my feet. One of the differences with ice-skating is that it requires a lot of strength in your ankles so at first your ankles hurt all the time, but you eventually learn to keep your feet straight and it gets better. Also if you have on figure skates or regular skates they rent most people there is a toe pick on the toe. A toe pick is jagged edge of metal used to help you stop on the ice. If you are not careful you can catch that on the ice and it can trip you up at times. Hockey players use different skates that stop you from the back of the skates. Most people fall on the ice at least once, its just part of skating. Everyone I have ever seen usually falls a lot when they start out or they try new moves like twirling, skating backwards and so on. You can get hurt, but in most cases I think it is more embarrassing than anything when you fall. If you really don't want to fall at all, try a different past time. Hope this helps.
