When I was in high school and college, I had a group of best friends. I would not be able to pick a "favorite" out from the group, because I was very close to all of them. After college things changed, and now I am definately closest to one of them, though I am careful to call her my "best" friend around my other friends. Now I am married, but I think there is a difference between a husband and a best girl-friend.

I agree. By definition one can only have one best friend. If one has four friends that are equally good its better gramatically to say i have four very good friends.

I think it's possible to have more than one best friend. In my mind, a best friend is someone you are very close to, can share anything with whether it's good or bad, and that will tell you if your new haircut is absolutely terrifying or not. I have 2 best friends, and they are both like sisters to me. I think it just all depends on the person, and whether he/she wants to let more than one person fully into his/her heart or not.

I do not rate any of my friends as best... may be one online friend but none other... i think best has to be one or else there is no meaning of attaching the word BEST to it i agree to what you said... but to be honest it hardly matters to me
