OldAge Homes or Independent Single Living?

The news of the death of a septuagenarian in New york city has mad almost everyone curious, as to how can one person who is dead past one year goes un noticed.
In such situations would you advice such people who are aged and whose children have deserted them or are singletons or have separated due to reasons of their own, stay alone or should shift to oldage homes?
