How can I stop myself valuing money too highly?

February 21, 2007 6:32am CST
I hate the fact that in the world we live in you have to have money in order to survive. However I am still affected by the way we are convinced that we 'need' things we don't really want. How can I stop this happening to me, as I would rather just live a minimalistic life but I'm not managing to do so.

It is true that we really need money for survival. But if you cannot live in a minimal way and you always overspend, try to get a help. Get anyone who is close to you to help budget your money, and if your married try to ask your husband to help you or if you are single try to ask your parents or brother or sister to help you out. That would be a great help for sure.

I don't overspend, in as far as I'm never in debt, plus I usually look for the cheapest things I can find. However we still have lots of things in the house we don't need, like loads of toys, clothes I hardly wear, books etc

Relocate yourself to the country sides. There you will have a better chance at having a simple life, although the country life is also catching up, life there can be more simple.

I would love to live in the country but unfortunately the house prices there are so much more expensive that I wouldn't be able to afford to move there, in fact money would become even more important as I would have to spend more on my mortgage.

I won't give you an reply, just request you to read a book. The never-old book is 'Gospel of Sri Ramkrishna' published by Ramkrishna Mission, India. Read each and every word, and try to follow them to the extent possible for you. If you can take even a single word, your thought process and life will change.

I like having money, it allows me to do things that I just wouldn't be able to do. The unfortunate things is buying things we don't really need or even really want. The way that I found, well I really just read it somewhere, but it is to never make a purchase for at least 24 hours after you decide you want it or if someone is trying to sell you something just tell them you never buy impulsively. It works for me more than 90% of the time. I still mess up but at least it's not every day.

I think that you should just keep in mind that not everything can be bought with money. Most of the best things in life are free. Whenever I feel that I am inadequate, I follow the advice my mom gave me--that I should look into those who have lesser in life so that I can appreciate more, what I have in my life.

I ask myself about the value we have towards money often aswell. It's like as we would have an implant that categorizes this from all of the other values we have in life. Isn't it curious how even a small sum of money which comes between two people can destroy their relationship? It's like the highest value that we despise. I allways figure that it's not the money I like, but it's the stuff I get for it. It's the only thing that never let's you forget it. It's the motivation for going on, because if you ignore it, the rest of the world starts to ignore you back. There are lots of ways of how to get the money and mostly they all depend on you. But to get the money legally you have to be smart. And to be smart is to learn. So value the knowledge instead of the money and you'll figure the way to earn as you go along. And when you have enough so you don't have to worry about how much to spend on something or whether you can afford it or not, then you'll have the time to attend to things that are not concerned with money and are also valuable in life. And I guess that will draw your attention of valuing money so much. And to get to this doesen't mean you have to be a millionare. If the problem is that there's never enough money to you, than you are obsessed with money. And this doesen't mean you value something.

we have the same problem michelledarcy. i do not earn money for myself, well except for mylot. i mean i dont work. i am a student. i get my money from my parents. i try to earn online through mylot but i don't get that much. i have my savings in the bank and it gets getting lower and lower everymonth as i keep on withdrawing and seldomly deposit. what i do to stop spending that much is to have a budget for a week. i try as much as possible to stick to that budget. secondly, i make a list first before buying what i want. this way i can at least have a picture of how much i will be needing. this way i can know if am releasing too much money already beyond my budget. when that happens i choose which things not to buy. its hard though, because it's like i wanted to buy everything. another important thing is to think over and over again of what you plan to buy. don't be an impulsive buyer. wait for hours or days before rushing to the store. this will give you much time to analyze things.

I think that is difficult, as the whole of Western society is very geared towards consumerism. I try not to buy new things for the sake of it, - certainly lots of women I know re-decorate, and have new kitchens done every couple of years(!), and I would never do that. Neither do I tend to buy clothes just because they look nice. They have to be necessary, and practical for me. I don't think we will ever completely eradicate the need for money in our lives though.

when i see things i think i want - i wait to buy it- then i realize i don't need it that badly. Lets say I see soemthing in a catalog I like, i fold over the page and put it on the side and a few days later after paying bills and seeing a vacation brochure for Hawaii I know that I don't need that and I would rather treat myself to a relaxing vacation then have an object I don't really need. It works for me..but my husband on the other hand in a totally different story..lol

That was one tough question michelle. When an individual has the capability to purchase a thing that is not necessarily needed but still longed for it there is no way sometimes that it can't be purchase we really want it to that's why we buy it solely because we can afford it. This is a hard thing to comment on because sometimes I practice this myself and having a hard time dealing with it as long as we have the capacity to pay sometimes we overlook the fact that it was necessary to have or not. The best move I make is I lessen my visit to the mall when I have money on hand or when my atm card is with me lol! because there is a tendecy that I saw something and I would really buy it even it is not neeeded. I really schedule my exposure to the mall sometimes I went straight to the grocery area lol! Buying things that our hearts desires is not a big deal but the question lies on how badly it is needed and if the amount that I spend worth it.

i think we all have that problem..unless we are totally closed off from the outside world..we have social lives and obligations that sometimes make us spend more than we would otherwise..i have clothes i hae worn for years..but i want to do some promotional little videos my friends have asked me to do which means wearing special costumes..so this is like a little job i must do..so i kinda have to fork out for it.. i think as long as we recycle are goods..i wouldn't feel tooooooooooooooo guilty in investing in the odd thing..nothing to excess..that is the key..

it is just u r state of mind and u will get no where by just discussing ti. i mean go ahead and act! just think before u buy a thing. hold it in your hand and think before u take it to the counter. ask yourself if u need the item or it is just a luxury. thin kwhen u are buying and not before or after.

I would also love to not value money so highly, but the material consumer society we live in makes this so hard. I don't want to be rich but would love not to have to worry about having enough money to buy the things I need, and a few of the things I want. Though no matter how much money you have the more you will want they say so the pursuit of wealth is never over. I've started making things for my house rather than buying them, I intend to start making clothes even. You still have to buy the fabric but it's cheaper than buying the finished items and makes you appreciate there value more. This is one way to change the way you think about buying things, I even found a pattern for a ct bed when I was planning to buy one now I can make my own.

Your sentence "we are convinced that we 'need' things we don't really want." Reminded me with another sentence I've heard in Brad pitt's movie "Fight club" few years back and I still remembering and I'll never forget , which says something like "we do things we hate , to buy things we don't need". I would suggest you watch this movie..if you haven't seen it yet,for sure it will help you .

I think if you have children it is really hard to find a way to stop consuming uneccessarily, but nevertheless we must try really hard so fair play to you for trying. As children are constantly growing there are always going to be clothes there not being worn, so recycle the clothes within your family as much as possible, same as with the toys. Encourage family and friends to do the same with you, for example if you have clothes that your kids no longer wear, donate them to someone with younger kids. Or you could give them to charity shops. I know that what you are saying is that you would rather you hadn't spent the money in the first place, but you could save some if you give some away.

Yes how right you are as if we had no money we could not survive. yes a lot of things we do not really need but we still go out and buy even more. Well before you buy something you have to think twice and say to yourself do I really need that.

There are so many things nowadays that can tempt us to buy eventhough we don't really need it. Since settling down, I had to learn to use money wisely. It was difficult at first. But I learned anyway. Its true that having too much money is not necessary for as long as you have a house to live, eat 3 meals a day, and other daily necessities. But some people are not contend with this simplicity of life. I use to buy a lot of things also. After a few days, I will questioned myself why did I buy those things. I try to minimize going to a lot of places to avoid spending too much.

only buy what you really need rather than buying something just cause you can or just cause you feel like it, try not to spend money and think of what other people in poverty have, the basic things in life is all you really need, food, shelter and water, the rest is just luxury! :)
