This is a good topic, as I didn't know what autosurf was either, and I've been interested to read the responses so far.
Someone mentioned paying to surf - how does this work, and are there any autosurf sites that are free to join?

Typically auto surf is a traffic exchange where you invest some money into the site, surf a predetermined amount of pages daily, and at the end of a pre specified time period, you either receive a payout or reinvest.
These are really elaborate pyramid schemes, and are basically scams. You would do best to avoid them.

There are several types of autosurf. Some autosurf sites allow you to earn traffic credits in exchange for looking at other people's sites. Then there are some work basically the same way but actually pay you a very small amount of cash & traffic credits in exchange for surfing (and showing your referral link)but don't require any investment to get paid. Then theres the autosurf sites that require a payment in order for you to earn anything.
I have had some success with the 1st 2 kinds (see my post Rotate this) but I avoid the ones that require you to pay in order to make money.
