If you're planning on becoming pregnant in the next few years, avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. These fish contain high levels of mercury, a chemical that lingers in your body and may harm the nervous system of fetus.

Also, make sure you're getting enough folic acid. It's very important to avoid certain defects of the brain and spinal cord. Also to prevent the baby being born premature. Eating a healthy diet overall is also very important. If you smoke, make an effort to stop smoking. I know many woman who wait until they are actually pregnant and then try to stop, but it's much harder to do so quickly. I don't have anything personally against smoking, but smoking while pregnant is very bad for the baby.
