Unlike in western countries, in India, people do not gift flowers to others as a mark of love or affection. Only the married ones or lovers give jasmine (in south India especially) to their wives or girl friends and it is treated as mark of great love and affection by the receiver. Otherwise, giving red roses/yellow roses or any other flower is not a common practice. Another speciality is people do buy flowers for offering it to gods (idols) as the part of their prayers.

I love it when my boyfriend or my kids bring me home wild flowers of any kind that they saw and thought of me and picked for me but when I recieve storebought flowers (especially roses) from a boyfriend my first thought is "what did he do?" "why does he feel guilty?". I'm not sure why but to me roses are a symbol of guilt.

i like to give a red rose to my girlfriend whenever i go on a date where maybe we will have dinner, a juice or ice cream, the red rose is the most symbolic flower of love . red roses are usually expensive but you can get them free by taking them from a neighbors garden :), i don't advice you to do this if the neighbor is nuts :P
