How would you feel whan you are '2nd best'?

Till my High School days, I was ranked 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd and many times 1st; but I never got second place. That made me feel bad about being second. In my logic : In a game too, the second place holder is a looser one as he has been defeated by topper. Even third place holder would be happier as he survived in the battle of "top 3". So I never dreamt of being 2nd. But in the two years of Senior Secondary, I was always outwitted by a boy of my class. I tried my best to be the first one, and always scored better than him in class tests etc., but never could attain the first rank in exams :( that was really depressing!! How about you? How would you feel if you miss the 'best' title by a small margin?
