Tipping

To tip, or not to tip? Sadly, there is no easy answer to this because tipping etiquette differs from country to country. When you check into a hotel, do you tip the bellboy? If yes, how much would the tip amount be? It is not enough just to know the local custom for tipping, we have to know the local rate too.

I try to tip according to the service. If the bellboy just shows you to the room, One dollar. If he carries your luggage, a couple of dollars at the least, up to $5. If you can afford a luxury 5-star hotel, then of course the tip would have to be higher. For instance, about 5% of the room rate. After dining, I always try to figure at least 10-15%, depending on the quality of the service. I try to tip well, but I have actually written on a napkin "Here's your tip....IMPROVE!! I know that was wrong, but the waitress did a lousy job, and acted like we were making her go out of her way to fill up a glass of iced tea. Tipping is just that, if you get good service, give a good tip, if not, give less. I think if everyone did this, customer service would get a lot better than it is.
