Do you feed your dog "people food"?

I know the vets and all the health people say it's a big no no but I have ALWAYS fed mine people food. I know some people that feed their dogs nothing but people food. I do think they need food prepared specifically for their needs, hence the dog food, but I think that MOST can tolerate and love people food. I love sharing mine with my dogs!

Yep, we do... we give her regular dog food, but mix in a little of the leftovers from dinner in with it and stir it all up. I buy her the kind of dog food that makes gravy, so anything I add to her food gets covered with the gravy so she eats the whole thing. If I don't mix it with water, then she'll pick out all the human food and leave the dog food! lol!

OMG.. my lab JUST did that this afternoon. I had leftover chicken that I kept saying I was going to make into chicken salad but never did and I didn't want it to go bad. I figured the dogs and cats would LOVE it and it's not like it was "unhealthy" food for them. My lab picked every ounce of real meat out of his bowl of meat and dog food with water on it until I finally yelled at him and told him "get over there and eat it all". LOL

Yes I sure do. I have all his life. He would have no other way, now he thinks he NEEDS it each and every day and gets ticked off when he doesn't get some kind of human food at least twice on his dog food. lol Spoiled much, why yes? lol But he is 17 now and set in his ways.

I don't have a dog. My in laws have a dog and we can't feed her people food a lot because she'll get sick. If I had a dog though I would feed her people food as long as she could tolerate it.

It is not that they shouldn't be fed with table food, I think the vets are just extracareful because some or in other cases most of the food we eat can be toxic to our canine friends like chocolates or anything sweet, soysauce, grapes and the likes, etc. Diferent dogs react differently because some, due to everyday intakes of such kinds of food might have increased their resistance or adopt to those kinds of stuffs. Thing is,we should not overdo it. Especially the sweet ones.

We give our dog scraps, but avoid giving them anything with much fat. A high-fat diet can lead to pancreatitis in dogs.

it is always better to follow the vets advise in this matter. U can feed certain things which we eat but not all the things. Consult ur doc before u give anything on ur own.

Dogs do need dog food to supply them with the nutrition that canines specifically need. People food is OK for a treat, but it does not have the right balance of nutrients for a dog as their staple diet. Dogs can get obese just as humans do, so that's another thing to consider. Of course a dog loves a "treat" of people food once in a while, but I don't think it should be an every day thing. I also believe that dogs who get a lot of people food can become obnoxious about begging when the family is trying to eat dinner or when you are eating anything at all.

Oh I agree, they do have special needs that just human food cannot supply. It's a 'treat' more then a meal. Although there are supplements that you can give that are specifically meant for dogs who eat nothing but people food and will still need some vitamins and minerals that people food cannot supply. All pets become a bit obnoxious when it comes to people food if they're given it.. I have cats that are worse then the dogs! LOL So I agree on that!

I have fed my dogs people food. I have a problem with getting them to eat dog food. They rather eat people food than dog food, even when I try to hid it, they just eat around it. If it's not the gormet type food they won't eat dog food at all.

Yes, carrots, celery, brocolli, tomatoes, low fat popcorn. Chocolate and onions can be toxic to dogs. My guys get their own food and dog treats, they like human food, don't get me wrong, but they also are very aware of what they can ask for. They know they stand the best chance with popcorn and love the microwave and the popping sounds - nothing gets past them.

I used to feed our dogs people food..but since we have a veterinarian in the family now...we are very compliant...it's so much better for the dogs health ...especially the dog's weight.....I just see all the health problems dogs have that eat people food and it makes me realize that their systems are so different from ours and for optimal health and longevity it's dog food for the dogs and people food for the people...but boy is it a hard transition!!! I have a friend who lost her dog to a disease of the bowel directly caused by his inability to digest the people food... now she has such regrets...so her other dogs had to go through the tough change over to strictly dog food...But who knows....farm dogs eat the scraps all their lives...and I know many people that feed their dogs nothing but table scraps...I just love them so much I wouldn't want to do anything to shorten their lives...so now I'm a compliant person....( at least in this area of my life) LOL

I do give my dog people food. Sometimes if I have left over cicken or meat I will mix it up with mashed vegetables and rice and feed this to my dog. She gets really dry skin so sometimes I will heat up a spoon full of grease and mix this in with her food and she loves it.

We have had dogs since when I was young especially in the province. We never had bought dog foods, there was nothing of such before. I have four dogs now and I share to them my own food. I cook not only for myself as I'm now living alone but for the five of us. My dogs are ordinary dogs but at least they are good companions and security.

My dogs and cat eat lots of people food. They have dog food out that they can eat. And the cat has her own food in her "house" (basically a box to keep the dogs out of the litter box!) but they really prefer people food. Generally, we put leftovers in the fridge when we are done eating. They stay in there two days and then the dogs and cat get them. Sometimes my husband eats them, but not very often. And I very rarely eat leftovers. Also, we have a baby that is almost 13 months old. His "sisters" always ask for food when he is in his high chair, and he usually obliges. He spoils them worse than we do! He just thinks they are so funny when they stand on their back legs.

i think its ok if you feed dogs human food. although you just have to keep in mind that not all people food are safe for dogs. and someone told me that if youre feeding them dogfood, and gave them people food, it will be harder to make them eat dogfood again.
