Something to Think About

If you are a light sleeper who is bothered by something like an air blower turning on and off, you might want to check on your hotel's heating system before booking that room. I can't tell you how many guests call down saying the blower is turning on and off all the time and it bothers them. I am a light sleeper and I've stayed here. It's not as bad as they make it out to be. But I guess if you are used to absolute quiet of baseboard-type heat to some it is hard to get used to. Also, don't wait until midnight to call down about it. Chances are there is one person on the desk and anyone from maintenance has gone home. I tell them to set it so it is blowing all the time instead of going off and on. They usually don't like that.

I am a very light sleeper and to make matters worse I am an insomniac so more often than not if something wakes me up, Ill end up being awake the whole night. I finally got fed up and started using earplugs. They seem to work for me and I get fairly undisturbed sleep.

I am used to the sounds of my own town, but I know those will vary from place to place. At home and when I travel I sleep with a little radio on. When I travel I take it with me, or arrange to have one in the room waiting for me when I get there. This way I don't notice the variation in background noise, and I sleep just fine. I also get to check out the local radio stations.

We usually turn the fan or blower to the on position so we have constant noise all night long at a hotel. Even at home my husband needs his "white noise" to get a good night's sleep. Me, I can fall asleep anywhere, but I am a very light sleeper - so may wake up a lot with any sound.

Depending on how loud the blower was, I can understand how it could be a problem. I am an insomniac, so it doesn't take a lot to wake me up, and a lot more for me to get back to sleep so if the blower is kicking on and off all night it might be a major problem for me. If it were relatively quite though, it probably wouldn't bother me. A few weeks ago I spent the night at a friend's house rather than driving all the way home late at night. I slept in her spare room, near the furnace. I don't think I slept at all that night. It seemed that every time I started to drift off to sleep the furnace would kick on. It sounded like thunder. It probably wasn't really that loud, but to someone who has been jolted awake it can seem that way. It wasn't something I would have thought of ahead of time, but if I had gone into the bedroom sooner and heard how loud it was, I think I would have been asking her if the couch was taken.
