What do you mean by "throw out the night"? I know that, for my little brother and sister (5 and 8), we put on a lullaby in their room for them to go to sleep to. They are usually worn out by the end of the day. They talk and laugh some, but they are usually asleep within about fifteen minutes. They also have two nightlights: one that changes colours and one that gives off a normal light. The normal light makes it easier for them to get out of the bed in the middle of the night if they need to go to the restroom or something, and the light that changes colours helps put them to sleep, too, because they watch it and fall asleep watching it. What's really cool is the fact that they don't even realize it when they've fallen asleep.
