Cat eating

United States

A friend of mine told me that in his country, all they feed their cats are rice and milk. Occassionally they will give them something of theirs. He told me that these cats can live 14 years. Can you imagine that? In the USA, we go for all these fancy healthful foods, and they live long lives too. What is your opinion of this?

I love my cats and the amount of years is not the important thing to me. The quality of their life is the important thing to me. I spend alot of money on DM Food for my simease. she is a diabetic. So her food is very expensive. We give the other cat. Purina indoor formuala. Giving her this food stopped her from eating my houseplants. LOL No, they were not posion to her but it made me mad.

To add on to the Lillies and Christmas Plants...Philadendron and Ivy are also poisonous to cats if ingested.

Thank you for sharing that. So many things many of us need to still learn to make sure our loved kitties are well.

That's really something! In what country is this? In my personal opinion milk and table scraps have never sat well with my cat. She inevitably gets sick everytime. I would imagine though that if a cat was raised on milk, rice and table food they would become accustomed to those foods and have no problems. Very interesting topic!

I believe that the cats may live a long time on this diet, but I wouldn't think that they are too healthy. Cats are carnivores, and they need the nutrients in meat to maintain health. There are also some nutrients that are essential for cats, such as taurine, which are not found in rice and milk. As a matter of fact, most veterinarians will discourage you from giving your cat milk; it is a myth that they need milk. The fact is that they do not digest milk properly. The rice I can see as useful because many pet foods contain rice to aid in digestion, but cats also require meat. I go with food that is made for cats' unique nutrition. I want to make sure that he is as healthy as possible.

I think that we as Americans spoil our animals. In some countries cats are, well, just cats, lol. They don't treat them as members of the family as we do. Some countries do not have packaged food such as Purina and have to be imported (expensive). Rice and milk are probably cheaper. I'm wonder though since cats are carnivores if that's a good diet for them. Obviously they "live" on it, but are they that well nourished?

My kids - Bro and sisc
I can not even understand how they live for any amount of time on that. I spoil both my cats with the finest foods, and cleaning, and they stay indoors. They are my fury babies. Hre's a picture.

That's Nothing! I fed my cat whatever she wants, and she's 21 years old and still healthy and strong. But now she's lost all her teeth, and I can only feed her wet cat food.

Three of my cats - Three white cats in a row.
Well I really do not care that cats are eating this in other countries and living long lives I would never feed my cats such things. All my cats are purebreds and I only feed them Science diet. I never buy food from the grocery store for them and never canned food. I do not want to sound arrogant but I love my cats and I give them nothing but the best.

I agree with 100%. They are loving creatures, and we are responsible to tend to them, as if they were our children.

Well here the UK they also just get all the Cats Healthfood and I have never heard of rice being given to Cats lol. Our Cats do get the occassional Milk but apart from that they are on Cats Dried food. The tin food does not agree with them that well.

Domestic Cat - This is from an animal care page on the net. I love cats.
I think cats as a species are survivors. In his country they probably are grand mousers, and find other sources of protein as well. I think we do spoil our animals.

I have never heard of that and thats all well and good. But you cant change your cat from eating canned food to rice and milk because the cat wont eat it. If you going to do that you have bring the cat up eating only rice and milk.

I can't see just feeding my cat rice and milk. My cat is so picky. I will admit I don't go to the expensive store and buy the pricy cat food but if I even get the wrong flavour she won't eat it. I thought humans are picky eaters.

Can't argue with success. Maybe it is the cat food companies in this country telling us that we shouldn't feed our cats from the table. In whatever country this was, maybe that is all they can afford to feed their cats. This is a tough call. Probably there are many foods cats can eat other than regular cat food. But if they don't work, then you have a sick cat or a dying one.

my mother in laws cat lived to be 17 or 18 and she fed her crunchie cta food and wet cat food and scraps from the table, same with my friend and hers lived to be 20. I think it's just genetics like with people, I know a woman who mother lived to be 104 and she is almost 90 now- obviously following in her mothers footsteps.

Maybe from a very early age you would have to start them off on this as to get them used to it, but am not sure as to whether it is the best diet for them. But then reading that you say they live for up to 14 years of age, makes me wonder as to how "fussy" we make our own cats by trying to please them with "what they like to eat" The nutrition is my concern as I have always thought they need some oilyness in their diet for their inner health eg. furballs! I was told not to give a cat milk and yet a cat I had lived till she was 17 and from day one (she was about 4 days old) when we found her, had milk, so wonders never cease!

Isn't it amazing the addaptability of animals. I'm sure that they eat all kinds of things in other countries that seem strange to us in the USA. I would never imagined it myself.. You know when I first read this title..I thought you were going to tell us your friend ate cats...lol

I can't imagine a cat eating just rice and milk and still be healthy. You didn't say if this was an outdoor or indoor cat only. If he's an outside cat he's probably getting his nutrition from someplace else, I would hope. If it's an indoor cat it's amazing that the cat is not sick although I'm sure strange things do happen. I don't buy the expensive healthy foods, but I do buy brands such as Friskies, Whiskas and so on since my cats are so finicky I have to keep changing the brands and flavors.

My friend said she was giving her cat rice, milk & tuna to settle the cats tummy as it had been ill. I thought it was a strange choice, but maybe not so now!
