Apple pies made with red hots

Years ago, my first mother-in-law used to make her apple pies with red hots in them. They were the best apple pies I ever tasted. Anyone ever made one cause since it was so long ago, I forgot how many to put in and how much sugar to eliminate. I hate the thought of using trial and error to find out but will if I have to.

What a cool idea! I never would have thought to use red hots in pie making! Have you noticed that red hots seem to be harder to find these days? I tried to find them for my holiday baking and had to search all over for them. I've kept my eyes out since that time and have noticed that they're pretty scarce.

These recipes sound awesome. Maybe I can get my mom to use them. Red hots are available at my local grocery store called Aldi's.

there are lots of online candy companies that specialize in hard to find or even out of production candies! just do a quick chacha.com search and they'll turn up so many candies you forgot existed. I use those websites to get all the different cadbury bars (they don't sell the whole collection where I live) and they usually ship within a day of placing your order.

There are a couple of ways but here is my favorite: 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup red hots about 5 cups sliced apples 1 T flour 1 tsp lemmon juice 1 T butter Combine first three ingredients and cook until candy is melted. Add apples and simmer untill apples are red. Drain the syrup from the apples and set aside. Spread apples in unbaked pie shell. blend flour and lemmon juice into syrup and pour syrup over apples Dot with butter, put on top crust and bake at 400 degree F for about 30 min. You can also use most any apple pie recipe and omit the cinnamon and sprinkle about a fourth of a cup of red hots over the apples before putting the top crust on. However, I think the flavor penetrates the apples better the first way. Hope this helps.

I hate to say it but this one sounds good too. I guess its a good thing that my husband like apple pies. I have a feeling he is going to get a few. lol But I don't think it is going to hurt his feelings any. He is pretty happy with anything that I bake for him.

Yes, you will love them. I am not all that crazy about apple pie (cherry is my favorite of the fruit kind) but one made with red hots is the best. You will have to come back and let me know how you liked it.
