Why is the interior decor of theatres predominantly red?

I have found that the interior of theatres tends to be be predominantly red, notably the seats, carpeting and the stage curtain, and was wondering why this is.

I don't know, but I'll guess it's because red is the first color to "disappear" from visual sensitivity in the dim or dark lighting of a theatre. Or maybe it was a fancy color long ago, and it just stuck!
