Do you watch what you say or who you respond to.

I was just wondering if some people watch who they tend to respond to or do not post their opinion because somebody might give them a negative rating. Even if somebody doesn't agree with me I don't rate them badly it's their opinion. I have rated on person negatively but that was because they kept responding to my discussions and others with a yes or a no answer and that was it. How do others feel about it.

I don't worry too much about it. I know that my opinions sometimes don't agree with the general consensus, but it doesn't make my opinion any less valid. If everyone agreed with each other, this place would be awfully boring. I do my best to make sure my responses are respectful and articulate. If someone doesn't agree with me and wants to give me a negative reading, there isn't much I can do about that. But I'm not going to change the way I express myself for fear that somebody is going to ignore the rules set by mylot and give me a bad rating. I suggested in another thread that when giving a negative rating we should have to explain why, in hopes that would deter people from giving negative ratings for no reason. I still think it's a good idea.

I think having to explain yourself is a good idea. Atleast it would give them away of seeing if the person is just be rude about how they are rating somebody or the person actually broke a rule.

I tend to respond to discussions I am interestd in. Sometimes I disagree with the person hosting the discussion, but I write what I think, though always politely. I have been negatively rated by people who have disagreed with me. It's sad when that happens. Negative ratings should only be given out when someone breached the MyLot terms and conditions - eg they are copying discussions or being abusive or giving yes/no answers. You shouldn't use it to hurt people who simply disagree with you, because the whole point of discussion forums is to have a debate and you can't do that if you feel people will be vengeful to you just for expressing your views.

I totally agree and that would be the only way that I give a bad response. I try to make sure that the discussions I respond to I actually have an opinion on and what it is. I hear about so many getting rated negativly just for speaking their mind and I have also.
