I have a 6 year old daughter and one day I went walking with her and this rottweiler came out of nowhere and started running after my daughter...I thought that they were good dogs to have around kids as my friend, who is a rottweiler owner, told me. Should rottweilers be free to be around kids?

If the rottweiler is raised and properly trained in your home, the rottweiler can be free to be around kids in your home and not any other kid.

I have two rottweilers and I have not encountered any horror stories with my dogs. I think if you do plan on getting a rottweiler, you need to make sure the dog is well trained but I would not leave any dog around your daughter that is 6 years old. Rottweilers have gotten such a bad name due to inexperienced dog owners. I read one story to where a couple left their rotweiller around their newborn. I wouldn't leave any animal around my newborn baby. Our nephews who are now teenagers were around our dogs even as little toddlers but we never left them alone with the dogs. Our dogs are very trained. The kids in the neighborhood would always knock on the door to ask if our dogs could come out and play. Every experience is different. I wouldn't want to come across a loose rottweiler because I don't know if he/she has been trained. I am really sorry that your daughter was chased by a rottweiler. We never take our dogs out without a leash. We have a fenced yard and we also have a dog run within our fence.

I owned a rott and he was just too goofy to even think about hurting anyone! he was so gentle hearted, I loved him... his name was bruno...but it did'nt suit him at all! Should have called him wimpy! lol He went to live with my daughter after she married, he was a wonderfully sweet dog!

I don't think that ANY dog should be "free to be around kids". There are leash laws for a reason. A dog on the loose is a danger for many reasons. Most dogs won't attack random strangers, but can cause traffic accidents, property damage and injury to other animals. There is no reason that a rottie should not be around children if that dog has been socialized with them and is under the control of his/her person. Of course, care needs to be taken in introducing ANY dog to a child. It seems that there are breeds that are deemed dangerous and people get their panties in a bunch about them. I am a Pit Bull Mom, so I KNOW the preconceived notions people have about my dog. All in all, no dog should run off leash around town, and care should be used when children/dogs are introduced to each other.

I have a pure rott female and a mixed breed rott fixed male. I wouldn't have any other dog. I've had other rotts and so has family members. They are the sweetest dogs if trained right. You can have a mean toy poodle if trained wrong. In all actuallity smaller dogs are more apt to attack a small child than a big dog. The big dogs have more confidence and cannot be hurt so easily. My 3 year old climbs all over my female and male. they have no issues with it. When they have enough they go upstairs. I can tell you one thing though. If anyone ever tried to grab my daughter it would be the last thing they ever do.
