Jack Russell Terrier hair

I was looking for a Jack Russell Terrier puppy when I visited this friend whose dog had just given birth. The puppies father is a short-haired JRT, while the mother is wire-haired. I love the short haired but I cannot even look at the wire haired. Is there a way to know what kind of hair the puppies will have? How soon will it show?
