Diversity and People

I have been blessed to know and care for a lot of people from a diverse array of backgrounds. I have always been interested in learning about different cultures, religions, ways of doing, thinking, knowing and being. I love to travel and explore - making new friends along the way. I know a lot of people stay within their own defined neighborhoods or make friends with people who are similiar. How about you? Do you like to be around people who are most like you or do you like to explore diversity of people?

I agree, its great getting to know people from a wide range of cultures.. I just have one criteria though. I was going to say that I need to have something in common with the other culture, but thats not true. One of my good friends in NZ is a Fijian Indian Muslim which I have nothing on common with. After reading the second post, my criteria is the other person / culture has to show respect to their culture first, as well as others in general... Hope this makes some sense... I'm still drinking my morning coffee.. lol..

I think the connection is more our sense of identification - the humanity that makes us realize we are really the same in many ways. I agree with you c.a. - we must have respect for our own culture first - and I think at least in the USA - many people lose touch with their cultural identity. I for one am third generation of Polish Americans in the USA!

In the U.S. it is hard to make friends with neighbors as well. But I work in a university environment and it is a great way to meet people from all over the world.
