When you are not busy, bake your favorite cake, without frosting, and freeze it. It will hold for 3 months. Then when you need it, take it out and cut it frozen. Also frost when it is frozen, as it will have less crumbs. to make a perfect cut on a cake that isn't frozen, use dental floss. It is easier than a knife.

I never realized you could freeze a cake. One question though, when you defrost it and eat it is it still moist or does it dry out?

I like it better. It is moist. I eat it frozen, that is even better than defrosted. If you wrap it really tight and air proof, you can keep it a few months.

I knew the dental floss thing, saw it at a wedding shower. I,perhaps, knew to freeze before frosting, but if I did, I had forgotten it. That would work well for me, as I like to do massive baking and cooking marathons, then be done for awhile. Thanks for the tips.

Those are some great tips, thanks for sharing. I have frozen a cake before I frosted it. It is much easier to handle and you don't have all the crumbs. I like the using floss to cut idea...that's really good.

When I was baking a wedding cake, I always froze it before I frosted it. It frosts better that way. I would never freeze if for more than a couple weeks though. I am sure it is fine to keep it frozen for up to 3 months but i personally would not keep it froze that long. We did keep the top of our wedding cake for a year but it was terrible. LOL Thanks for sharing your tip with myloters. I am sure many did not know that cakes could be frozen.

I am a terrible cheat, we don't eat a lot of cake in our house, but when I see that reduce sticker at the stores, I tend to stock up. Interesting about the floss... does the plain or mint flavoring make a difference?? lol :D

If the cake is mint, go for mint floss:)

I never thought of that but it's a good suggestion. But using dental floss to cut it??? I have never heard of that. Where on earth did you learn that one. It sure is different. I very seldom freeze stuff for future use but I should because it would definitely be more convenient.

Besides being an artist, I was a cake decorator. You can slice the cake for layers easier by holding the string tightly in each hand, and cutting the cake. It will be straighter than a knife.

well the freezing/frosting part as useful as it turns out to be it won't work for me. i can't keep a cake for 2 days, so i don't think one will last so long that will need frosting/freezing. i'm to covetous to do that. the dental floss though is a great help, because i always have troubles cuting cakes, especially the ones with creams.

The dental floss with help you to slice a cake, so you can frost it. Hold it tightly, it works every time.

Now that sounds like a good idea. I can not tell you how many times I wanted to make a cake, but just did not have the time to do so or that it I did not have the ingridents for it. I will have to try that soon. Thanks

I used to eat the ice cream really quick so it wouldn't melt into the cake, but that never really worked. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who didn't like cake and ice cream together. I can see your point, though. You wouldn't fit well into my family. Then I couldn't eat the cake and that's my FAVORITE part! But if you start with the cake, the ice cream has already melted into the cake and it's going to be gross.
