When do you bond vs. when do you lay down the iron fist with your kids? Is there a time when it's more appropriate to be understanding with your kids after you've been stringent with them about most things? (going to prom for example).

There should have been discussions well before the prom. There should have been family values and expectations well before each event as a teenagers. A good upbringing helps alot to deal with the things that most teenagers go through. If you are more firm as young ones then it does get easier with consistancy when they become older. Do not be afraid of an unpopular decision, it is what we have to do sometimes. We are not our kid friends. We are the parents. Communication is important from very little all through life. Good luck with this.
