I have seen the movie and also have read the book. I read the book first before watched the movie. So, it was very smooth for me to follow the storyline. It is an amazing story. In my opinion, it is very interesting and intriguing because the story is about the sacrifices and challenges faced or encountered by a geisha. It is very detail and elaborative. It is about love which is very universal like music. No one can live without love. That's a very fact. Anyone disagrees? Furthermore, the casting is great. The very beautiful Zhang Ziyi. The ever charismatic Ken Watanabe. My favourite actress Michelle Yeoh who was born in the same country as mine, Malaysia. They are all great in the movie. That's what I think. But what do you think?

I didn't know much about Geishas until I watched the film on dvd. It was recommended to my in one of my posts here on myLot. I found it to be very educational and I must confess that I found it very moving and sad in places. I was glad it had a happy ending as this is the way I like all films to end.

If you like moving and touching films, you should also watch 'Rain Man', if you haven't watched yet, starring one of my most favourite actors, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The movie was released in December 1988.

Thank you for that. I have heard of the film but I don't remember having seen it. I must check now to see what site is selling it the cheapest so that I can buy it.

real maiko - real maiko japan
I have read the book, 'Memoirs of Geisha' since then i search anything about a geisha and geisha looks like. The maiko dress differently for a geisha and when the review of the movie arrived, im just a little bit dissapointed because no one in the character is really from japan. A real japanies maiko and geisha are chubby in he cheek and nothing can compare the delicated of soft japanese vocal and attituded. Did you ever saw "oshin"? and karate kid 3 in japan? now they are really japanesse girl. One more thing. I don't understand why they re-model the hair dew in 'Memoirs of Geisha' maikos? cos nothing looks like japanesse maiko at all. Accept for the kimono they wear.the real maiko hair dew should be chubby too in some places.my God! they never even read the novel! the can't change the past just because it doesn't suit the face of the actress. i don't say that im not interesting to see the movie. i ll watch it someday. i like an happy ending story.

hi! i watched the movie twice and i intend to read the book. the movie is very powerfully poignant and insightful. i think it really portrayed the emotions behind what a geisha life looks like-- all the angst, the passion, the hope, the anger and the sorrows that come with it. I even saw some sort of political slant to it in the sense that even among the geishas there are cloak and dagger movements, betrayals, false appearances and deceptions. it is just saddening to think that this movie somehow depicts real life, not just with geishas. but what i liked best about the film is the hope and enduring quality it has at the end. the fact that the main geisha found her man at the end of the film after numerous trials and tribulation really gave me a sense of hope and a scene to swoon over!
