Just recently, justice was served !!

Last August, two teenage brothers in Atlanta, GA, were charged with torturing and baking a three-month-old puppy to death. Just recently, justice was served - the brothers received the maximum sentence allowable in each of the nine counts under which they were charged. These sentences will be served concurrently, and in effect, the young men will serve 10 years in prison and 10 years under strict probation, for a total of 20 years. The horrific death of this poor puppy touched animal lovers around the world, and the strong sentencing in this case highlights how strongly the public feels about cruelty toward animals. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard felt so strongly about seeking justice in this case – describing the death of this puppy as "so egregious it cries out for special attention" - that he sent a letter to Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue requesting that the penalty for animal cruelty be raised above the current five year maximum. DA Howard should be applauded for his commitment to justice and the humane treatment of animals – please sign this petition today to congratulate him on success in this case! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/311945051?z00m=9416011&z00m=9416011<l=1172706503

Serves them right! I do hope this will be a lesson to those people that treats dogs badly. Also, I wish that country's like mine (Philippines) would also have strict laws regarding animal cruelty because here, there are some cities/provinces that treat dogs as food delicacies!

I am a dog lover. I have 3, one for each of my kids. As a matter of fact, they are treated alot like my kids. They are spoiled brats with awesome dispositions. Dogs are living beings with feelings. I can't imagine the horror that puppy felt. Those boys are not getting what they deserve, they deserve worse. There is no reason for them to hurt a defenseless animal. Where is the fairness in that? It's like child abuse or elderly abuse. Why pick on something (or someone) who can't fight back?? Where's the sport? They probably won't fare well in prison, the big boys don't like certain behavior.

Yes I've heard it can be just as tough for an animal abuser as it is for child abusers, molesters and murderers. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes that's for sure.

I am thrilled to hear this. There doesn't seem to be a lot of laws that protect any type of animals. I am an animal lover, and it hurts me so much to hear or see horrible things that are inflicted upon these animals by so called "humans." I don't even believe in labs torching animals for any reason. Animals have feelings and emotions too. I always put myself into that animal in my mind, and can feels its pain and nobody there to help. More laws and stricter punishments are indeed needed. These boys started with a puppy, and would end up being ser. killers. I'm so happy they got what they deserved. Perhaps life time would have even been better for them behind bars.

Yes that worries me alot when they only get a slap on the wrist. Do they then move on to torturing kids...they are helpless too. Well considering they are young, a lifetime might be a bit much...but who knows maybe that would be best. It would ensure they didn't do it again.

Dear myLotians, I am happy that the criminials who committed the crime of cruelty to the puppy was sentenced becos otherwise there will be no peace and order in the world. Though the victim was an animal, it is still a living thing though not a humn being. The pupply had a life and it was brutally murdered. If such criminals are not brought to justice and duly punished, cruelty to animals will be on the rise. I believe GOD IS GREAT becos GOD TREATS ALL BEINGS EQUALLY. Regards, vraman

I hope so too, it's just been recently that people are really taking animal cruelty seriously and punishments are now starting to fit the crime. There's still hope for all countries. I don't think I could ever eat dog meat..yuk

OMG!!!!!! I did NOT hear about this!!! But just as I was reading it I was CRYING MY EYES OUT!!! Words can't explain how hurt I am. I don't understand how someone can do that to an animal, whether it's a mouse or a dog! I will never feel as though justice has been served. What is twenty years suppose to make up for what they did do a poor innocent animal? No! Is twenty years suppose to equal the life of a puppy? Hell no. Animal abuse is a very serious thing and everyone should take it seriously not just "Oh it's just an animal." Dogs are so loyal to their owners and then we're going to turn around and torture them? when you walk down the street you will see a loving dog with their homeless owner, that is how loyal they are. All they want is our love! Why do people in this world have to treat them like they did something wrong?! I am SO FREAKING OUTRAGED! Now I'm going to go to bed crying.

Sorry it is an upsetting topic, but people need to be more aware. We need to make animal abuse a serious crime. To me it's no different than torturing an infant. I can't believe my ears or eyes when I hear or see statements like "it's just an animal" Well humans are "just" animals too, but it doesn't make it right. What a crazy world we live in.

I got this in an email earlier today and I already signed the petition to congratulate DA Howard. I am so glad those people are being punished for what they did. I can't imagine why anyone would do that to a puppy. Some people are just cruel and heartless.

I am so pleased to hear this. When I first heard about the case, I heard that they were going to be charged with a misdemeanor and probably not serve much time. I was so mad. How could wantonly torturing another living creature be a misdemeanor? I am overjoyed and applaud the courts for getting it right. I hope it changes the sicko's mentality that it is "just a dumb animal" We are supposed to protect the less fortunate and the ones that can't protect themselves. Now they will be punished accordingly.

Yes I thought they were going to get the usual slap on the hand. I was very impressed with how it was handled. I hope it get's worse and worse for animal abusers.. I bet they have a new respect for "dumb animals" when all is said and done.

That is wonderful to hear. You are right they need to increase the penalty for animal cruelty. What they should remember to is that many of these people that start out killing animals eventually turn towards humans. They are sick individuals who definitely need to be locked up and need help.

OH MY Gosh, I did not hear about this case when it occurred. That is deplorable. Thank goodness that the DA pulled out all the stops in the case. How can anyone do that? Imagine, just imagine the pain that poor animal endured. I wonder how much of the 10 years the boys will serve? Probably 20%..isn't that what ususally occurs? I hope they get a hefty dose of mental counseling while in the slammer.

Thank you for sharing the story plus the link. It's about time that something is done about this.I grew up around animals and it would never even have crossed my mind to do something like that. It is beyond me how someone can treat another living creature like that.I signed the petition and I sure hope that everyone who happens to read this will too.Maybe this will help encourage other officials to follow his example.

Yes that's what I'm hoping. The more praise he gets for this and the more attention it gets, may help others follow suit. I hope all officials see how wonderful what he did really is and that they too need to put their foot down on animal abuse cases.

I don't want to sound cruel but I really hate animal abusers. I know they are teenagers but for them to do this to such a weak animal is just unbelievable. I'm glad they will have to serve 10 years in prison, let's see how well they do being abused by other prisoners. Thank you for posting this!

I'm afraid of what people that could hurt something little, cute and innocent like a puppy could do to a human being, especially if provoked. That whole story makes me feel ill and wonder what goes through some people's heads. I'm very glad they're gonna get some time in prison and hopefully 10 years is enough to set them straight when they get out.

In my opinion, they got off easy. They took an innocent animal's life. How would they like it if someone tortured and baked them? What kind of sick person bakes a puppy? That's absolutely disgusting. I hope that this follows them everywhere, and they get treated with the disdain they deserve.

Thank you for sharing this! Thank goodness that justice is being served! Besides the fact that I love animals, especially dogs, and it completely broke my heart to hear of what they did, anyone who would do that to another living thing probably has serious mental health issues. I hope that they work on this during their jailtime and get better. I also hope that this will teach other animal abusers that it IS a serious crime.

Oh my goodness! I never heard about that, and it just makes me sick to my stomach. I can't imagine being able to hurt an innocent animal. Naturally, if an animal attacks you or someone around you and you are in danger, then it makes sense to protect yourself, but to hurt a puppy...with those sweet little eyes they have...Thanks for making me aware. Hooray for justice!
