When friends change avatars...

I can hardly remember all the nicknames of my MyLot friends. Therefore, I mainly rely on my visual memory to keep track of them. Generally, my brain succeeds to identify the Mylotter from the avatar even before I attempt to read his/her nickname.
So far, so good. Problems occur when some friends change their avatar. Those new avatars generally catch my attention as soon as I get on the friends page. Then, for a second or 2, I find myself wondering who is this member until I make the connection between the new avatar and the nickname.
I tend to stick to a single avatar (sometimes 2) across many web sites and for long periods of time. Do you prefer to keep the same avatar, or change yours once in a while? If you like changing avatars, then why do you do so?

I have a picture of my family as my avatar. I will probably change it next time we get a family picture taken. That might be a while, though. So I might just change it when my son has a picture taken again. I like to keep current pictures of my favorite people where I can see them. That's why I like having my son in my avatar picture.

I am that way too. I prefer to rely on visual memory to know who I'm talking to. Those without avatars also drive me nuts!!
I love my flags. You'll notice that my avatar matches my screenname perfectly. That's one reason why I'll never change it.

I did not notice the match before you mentioning it. Again, I mainly rely on my visual memory.

I couldn't agree with you more. I recognize people by Avatar and I have problem recognizing old friend if they change Avatar. I changed my Avatar twice. It was just different picture of me, but I change it back to initial one.

I kept my same avatar for about 200 posts, and then I noticed some of my friends had changed theirs. It was surprising at first, and a bit confusing, but I like it when someone continues to show their creativity. It's kinda fun to see all aspects of the person's personality.

I agree on the creativity part. Maybe that is why some people change their avatars so often? A way to express themselves. Also, we must not forget that not all of us put fake pictures. Some members use their actual photos.

Good thing I came across your discussion, as I was just about to start one like this, you see one of my friend's just changed avatars and I was initially having a hard time locating her. But then I finally realized that she was around but just had changed her avatar.
I guess it can be confusing, when friends do that.
I haven't changed my avatar since I kept this one in the initial stages, I had two different ones when I first joined, then when I finally got this one, I felt it was perfect, it's cute, it's funny, and just so me.
So now, here it is, my avatar, and I'm not planning to change it any time soon.
