I know we all put off going to the dentist till the last minute or at least I do. I hate to go to the dentis but getting our teeth checked out on a regular basis may just save our lives. A 12 year old Maryland boy died after bacteria from tooth spread to his brain. A routine tooth extraction might have saved his life. His family had no insurance so they could not afford to go to the dentist. You can read about this story here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17372104/ I think that every person in the world should have access to quality medial and dental care. I stress quality because I do not feel that just because you have no money that you should have to have second rate medical and dental care.I think that it should be free. Many people who go to the Doctor still cannot afford to purchase the meds that they are get a prescription for. What do you Think? Do you have insurance? Do you think all people should have insurance?

I have no insurance, as it is way too expensive to own privately at my age. And, most doctors require the fee paid, even before you go into see them. Dentists are no better. None of them will arrange a payment plan. So, if you do not have money, then go suffer. The whole system is awful. But, I must say that the people that have sued have caused a lot of this, and the insurance companies run the lives of everyone, including the doctors.

I used to have health insurance but since I have not been working I couldn't afford to keep it, and I was put off having when my Mother who has sinced passed away was taken to a hospital and she had health insurance was put into the old horrible part of the hospital with so many beds in it you couldn't move, it was a very depressing place, I went to the head of the hospital and said my mother had private health insurance she should have better than that and I was told that was where they put geriatrics not matter what cover they had....so I stopped my insurance immediately....

Many years ago, one of my girls friends had this problem. She has a tooth ache but refused to go to the dentist. It then started to swell and she figured if she rinsed it often, it would get better. But the swelling went down her neck and into her ear. She finally listened when her fever spiked and went to a dentist! Thank goodness...because she was not doing well! So when my partner started to get an ache, I urged him to go also. He refused for a bit but then I forced him to along with the pain. He had to take meds for infection and had to have a root canal. Sadly, we could not afford it either and ti maxed out a credit card. But at least he had it taken care of! :)

It is sad but true that many people put off going to the doctors or dentists because they have no insurance. I have been at both ends of the spectrum and somwhere in between. The choice is a hard one to make when you have no insurance and you don't really have the extra money to pay up front. Typically I didn't take myself or my children to the doctors or dentists because we just couldn't afford it if it wasn't an emergency. When you are in the position of deciding whether to buy clothes for the kids or food for the table insurance seems a luxury. Even when you hear about stories like this it doesn't change your situation and you still have to decide if you can afford it. In actuallity what is the probabilatly of having that happen to you or your child. Very small. I'm now in a situtation where we have good insurance but I still don't run off to the doctors or dentists at the least little sign of sickness. That is just as bad. I have also been in the situation where we had insurance but the deductable was so high that it was virtualy worthless to have unless you ended up in the hospital. I believe everyone should have insurance but the reality is is that not everyone will have it for one reason or another.

Thisis very true. It can wreck your health. I had some bone deteriation and it caused me alot of problems. Its really good to catch things before they get too far out of hand. I am also one who belivevs if you need false teeth , please get them. Its not worth your health to stall this and be sick. They are finding out more and more about dangerous neglecting yourr teeth can be.

I was shocked to hear about this while at work today as one of my students heard about this happening. It is awful that this happened to this boy and it is ashame that the parents could not afford to pay for the procedure that would have helped him. I think medical and dental coverage is a joke and they charge too much and keep making it more difficult for people to be able to take care of themselves and their loved ones. The health insurance companies do not seem to care about people and only think about the money. I do have medical and dental and it costs way too much. Something definitely needs to be done so that everyone can have coverage to protect themselves from something like this happening.

I totally agree with you there it seems to me that today they only care about money and not the Health of People. If you haven't got the Money they will not treat you. It is not fair at all. As for the Prescriptions it is disgusting how much they cost now People don't even get enough in a Payrise anymore to cover everything that is going up.

yep. my friend always put off her dentist's appointment coz she hates going to the dentist. she ended up paying more coz she needed to have extensive root canal treatment coz she has been delaying it. the dentist told her that if she didn't have that complications would've gotten to her brain. scary!

I've heard about infections in someones mouth killing them. It's really scary and makes me make sur I schedule my regular dentist appointments along with any other appointments if something like that comes up. I hate going to the dentist, but I'd rather deal with a little fear than dying because I didn't.

I brush my teeth twice a day daily. I brush my teeth in the morning and the evening sometimes I brush in the middle of the day though. It just depends if I feel like it. So I brush between 2 and 3 times a day.

I saw this and was horrified- For starters I do NOT have dental insurance.. My workplace gives us medical insurance (they pay part and we do too) but for dental it is total employee paid. I chose to not get it- For many reasons (it didn't cover orthodontia, paid only 50% for some proccedures).. I just put extra in my FSA plan-- it pays me back for cleanings and such- I would never not take my daughter to the dentist if she had a toothache! I understand that some families don't have the extra to pay for these types of things-- but this just proves that you have to go.. The dentists in my area do payment plans if you can't pay up front. I think all people should have insurance-- I am actually leaning towards the government-based insurance for all of us. With the price of insurance going up by double digit % each year- It's so expensive!

I went into the dentist about two weeks ago for a tooth ache and found out that I had an infection that was bad enough it could have moved into my brain. They immediately gave me a root canal and saved my life. So I have heard of a toothache killing you but that's really sad about the 12 year old kid. Maybe they should make people have medical insurance just like they make people have auto insurance.

You are more likely to suffer from a bad heart if you have bad teeth and again it is due to infections that can get in the blood. My son had to have major heart surgery a couple of years ago when he was 18 and one of the things he had to have done before the op was visit the dentist to make sure he did not need any treatment. This is because if there had been anything wrong with his teeth it could have given him infection after his op and could be life threatening.

I read about that too! That is so sad! Plus it is sort of worrying me, because I have an abscessed tooth right now and don't have dental insurance and I have an alarmingly low income of about $400/month because I'm a student and only work part time. I definitely think everyone should have access to quality medical and dental care! Especially people with kids... right now they can get Medicaid but it is often really hard to get certain things paid for. It would be nice if all doctors and dentists were required by the medical association or dental association to take a certain percentage of their patients on a sliding scale fee. Most doctors and dentists make enough from people with good insurance that they could afford to help out the people who don't! I mean, this is people's HEALTH we're talking about here!!!

I have been fighting the battle of dental care for my family for the past 6 years when we moved to Wisconsin. We are under state medical insurance, which does have a dental plan. The catch is finding a dentist who takes it. I myself have a mouth full of terrible teeth, but I can make due. I worried about my kids teeth. My oldest to have tooth aches on a regular basis. So I'm on a waiting list to get them into a dentist that takes our insurance. But the waiting list is well over a year. I've called private dentist and gotten prices for us to pay out of pocket and there is no way I can afford what they want. It's a catch 22. IT STINKS!!!
