Do You Send Your Kids to School in Bad Weather????

I am currently going through this argument myself. The last time we got a snowstorm they waited until the last minute to cancel school. I said the night before I wasn't sending my kids. We live in a rural area and there are a lot of back roads that twist and wind through the mountains. My partner wants to send the kids no matter what if school is open. The argument ended last time when school was cancelled. Now it's happenign again - we are expected to get 1-2 feet of snow. I already said my kids aren't going and he's saying he'll get the kids there no matter what. Does this make sense? If they happen to dismiss early, then there's the problem if someone isn't home for them and they have to walk a mile in drifting snow from the bus stop to our house. If they dismiss regular time, I really wouldn't want them on a school bus in snow as deep as a foot or more. So do you have a policy that when school is open your kids go? Or do you take other factors into account, especially the weather?

When my children went to school (home-schooled now) I kept them home when the weather was bad even if the school department didn't cancel. My son was in a bus accident in a snow storm once, nothing serious & no one was hurt, the bus was hit by a sliding car. After that I just didn't feel comfortable sending him to school in weather I wouldn't want to drive in either. If it's a light dusting of snow, I might send them. Or if it snowed a lot the day before but the roads are already plowed & salted I might send them. But more often than not, if it were snowing they stayed home.

I understand what you are saying. I hate it when they wait untill the last minute to cancell school. Here if it is colder the 0 degrees with or without wind chill they cancell. Snow on the other hand, I have no idea how they do it. My kids have missed 6 days this year so far with lots of 2 hour delays. One of the days that there was a 2 hour delay they waited untill it almost expired and then cancelled. Of course, I had sent one of my kids down to the bus stop. :( We live in the city but still he walked one full block just to find out there was no school. I'd say if you feel your kids are in danger then call them in. Your kids come first.

If the buses are running then the kids go. Staying home due to weather is an illegal absence, unless you are writing a note saying they are sick. They are pretty good here about cancellations since we live in a rural mountainous area too. If they are staying home then you have back up supervision. If they are coming home early can't your parents keep an eye out? or aren't you home usually days too? How come they have to walk so far? Doesn't the bus come up your road? I know the school here has send the kids home early and we didn't know about it -- our driveway is about 1000 feet long - but at least it is not on the actually road that they'd be walking.

If we are expecting bad weather I always watch the weather channel and if it liiks to bad I don't send them. I think you have to use you best judgment if you think your child could be harmed becouse of it then don't send them.
