chevy 235 6cyl engine numbers

My son has a 1960 Belair and we would really like to know if it has the origianl 6 in it. We've the serial number on the passenger side of the block however we have been told there is another number somewhere that has to be compared to the vehicle vin number in order to determine if the engine is orignial.
We have of couse done some scrapping and cleaning in an attempt to locate it. Can anyone tell me specifically where to look?
