Who was the best artist of the 20th century? Many critics suggest either Matisse the colourful fauvist or Picasso the wacky cubist. Or do you prefer someone else?

I prefer Edward Hopper the social realist.

Yes, I do also like the atmospheric realism of Hopper's paintings

Describing Picasso as a wacky cubist is a bit limited. I don't think you can pick either Picasso or Matisse. They each had a huge influence. Many like both and many don't like everything they made. So really I think it's impossible to choose.

Well I think Andy Warhol had a great influence on 20th century art.

I used to like Andy Warhole but I've come to believe he was more of a con merchant who just made good. I could never now consider any of his work great art.

I think it probably was Matisse. He was a great colourist as you say. Some of Picasso's later work did go off the boil a bit.
