When you're ill or have problems people tell you "Read the Bible" Why?

I honestly don't get the reason why people can tell someone that. Weather they're sick or they have problems. It's not like that people NEVER read the Bible or even if they didn't that doesn't mean that they don't feel close to God. When I was younger I thought that was a good idea but now that I've grown I think we people should be more supportive with one another. Telling a person to read a bible when they have problems may give them the wrong signals like 1) you're deeply disturbed and you need the enlightenment of the words of our Lord to solve your problem. 2) you have so little faith in our God that's why you're in this mess and reading the bible will somehow lighten your burden. 3)he's a lost cause. 4)mostly, it's like you're indirectly saying to the person that they have little faith in God. I never want to question a persons faith because I don't know how their life is and I also don't want to be questioned as well. I noticed this when my friend was sick and he also had troubles with his girlfriend. One of my religious friends instead of offering him a listening ear to hear his problem just advised my sick friend to read the bible. To my understanding my religious friend just used the bible as an escape goat so that he can AT LEAST say something nice. But there's a difference between saying something nice and saying something right, right!? As soon as my friend went on his merry way I just stepped in my sick friend's room and offered him some comic books. He doesn't need anymore "search for enlightenment" or "spiritual healing" because all he needed was one of God's creations to offer him a helping hand. We had a great time together reading old comic books and it was the rare moments I saw my friend smile. I'm not saying it's wrong to read the bible, just don't always make it a habit and let it be the first suggestion to come out of your mouth. Be more sensitive, constructive and think out of the box. Inspiration, hope and enlightenment are mostly found outside the bible, I've experienced this a lot of times in my life.
