For 7 years I've done all my own graphics for my web site. This past year when I got my new computer I found I can't install my version of Paint Shop Pro (PSP) on the new computer. It can't read the disc. I miss PSP horribly but can't afford to buy a new version right now - I'm running Windows XP now where I was running Win98. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem or know of another similar graphics program? Free if at all possible! There are several on download.com but I'm not familiar with any of them.

The best alternative to PSP and Photoshop is GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). It is an open source project and as such is free to download. It has a similar interface to the above programs and just as many tools. I am running Windows XP as well and it works without any problems. It may take some getting used to but you should check it out: http://www.gimp.org/ http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

I agree GIMP is great. I used this from an online graphics course instead of Photoshop and my work came out better than those who used Photoshop.

Ok, I'm not at all familiar with PhotoShop except that I've heard of it - but I am downloading right now. I found several screenshots and tutorials and from what I can tell I should be able to do at least more than what I'm doing with Paint and Window editor :( I also found that GIMP can read the PSP files so that will be a big help as I have several things such as tubes saved that I used in PSP.

I'm not very computer savy. But we also are using Windows XP now and could not use some of the same software we had previously. Have you thought of checking out places like Ebay or Half.com or Amazon for a newer version of your Pain Shop Pro? I buy all the time from Half.com, I always check there first, then Ebay and then Amazon. Sometimes you can really find a bargain.

I was not a computer pro but I made some graphics and video editing at home, I have the same problem with my installation cd before and worst is I made a purchase on the internet and when it was deliver here the cd was damage. I email them and they instructed me to go to thier site where the installation program can be download thru that site of the said product and I download it and luckily used the said product. I really wish you can find the solution right away byfaith.

maribel I'm glad you got it to work, I've never purchased software online. We have a great store in town that carries a ton of software programs and often have good deals (I've found things there cheaper than online) but they don't seem to have any deals on PSP.

I'm running windows XP too and I use paintshop with out any problem. I enjoy the software very much and I didn't have a problem with this. Are you sure that the problem is the windows? Try to contact Jasc company and ask them about your problem. Maybe they will find you a good solution. If not, I recommend you to use this softwares instead of paint shop: Microsoft Expression, or Gimp. those are very good softwares that I like...

No, Windows is not the problem the problem is my computer doesn't recognize the disc - it's old, PSP 5. I just included what Windows program I am using because a lot of programs won't run on some platforms. I did get Gimp downloaded last night but haven't had a chance to install it yet - hoping it goes well so I can play with it. I did so love PSP.

I just popped over and took a look at paint net it looks good too. Two features of PSP I use the most are buttonizing and feathering edges. Would you or anyone know if either Gimp or Paint Net have these?
