Do you believe in the Evil Eye?

I´m from Canada, so I never heard about stuff like evil eyes until I had a baby here in Guatemala. Then suddenly everyone was very worried that my baby would be "eyed". He was given a red bead bracelet to ward off evil by his Catholic grandmother! When my son was screaming for no reason, they would take him, pray for him while passing an egg and some kind of herb over his body, then break the egg into a cup. Apparently the form of the egg in the water tells you if he was eyed or not. Sometimes it actually did look like a person, but that could happen with any egg, I think. The funny thing is that my son usually calmed down after these "treatments". I don´t know if he just got bored or if there is actually something to all this. Now he is 14 months old and he wakes up every night at one adn starts talking in his room and then cries. Sometimes he gets very scared and last night my husband mentioned that maybe he has been eyed or that there might be a spirit in his room, waking him up. I´m curious as to what other people think of this? Do you believe it or not? Do you think there´s any harm in trying the "cures" that they perform here?

I don't necessarily believe in curses or the evil eye, because mostly I think these types of things only work if you believe in them... does that make sense?? However, I do believe in protection, or energetic cleansing. I don't know if that is at all similar, but I frequently 'smudge' myself, my husband, dogs, home, with a burning sage stick. I believe it chases negativity away. I do believe in spirits and have had some encounters with them, but the evil eye is something I guess I'm not that familiar with. Have you asked your son who he's talking to at night???

Hi Gauatemom, im from the philippines and we also have lots of supertitious beliefs here, just not the same treatments as what you have there, it would really be nice to have a study on those things though...well because im an avid fan of science, i dont really believe much in superstition, though i do have respect for it because its already a part of tradition and culture and its one of those things thats makes our native culture unique... i mean it is hard to believe in it- since they have no scientific explanation or whatsoever and sometimes, im kinda scared to believe in it because it might eventually come true, like the saying that believing in something makes it true so id rather not. But so far all the cures that they perform that i know of- so far, are really not medically or scientifically harmful for the baby so its ok for me,it wont hurt having my baby wear a red bracelet or pin a garlic on his clothes, so if thats just the case then im ok with it. =)
